Experiment & expLore

This page is a space where I like to experiment and have some fun with my work. It's a place where I can step away from the more serious projects and let my creativity flow freely. Here, I like to play around with new tools and techniques, create sketches and storylines for animation movies, and generally try out new ideas. And also show some older fun projects.

Press launch sketch

For the press launch of "De Groene Grachten", (The Green Canals) I created an overview sketch featuring the historic, current, and future view of the Amsterdam canal district. The sketch includes one of the co-founders, Wubbo Ockels. Can you find him?

De Groene Grachten is a sustainability project in Amsterdam that aims to improve the sustainability of the city's historic canal district. The project focuses on retrofitting the old canal houses with modern technologies such as solar panels, green roofs, and insulation to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. The goal is to create a more sustainable and livable environment while preserving the unique character of the city's historic district.

Promotional booth

This project is actually quite old, but the story behind it is still fun and I believe the design is still timeless in its simplicity. When I was a student at Delft University of Technology, I had a part-time job promoting the university to potential new students. One of my responsibilities was to participate in the annual study fair, but the promotional booth was lackluster. As a joke, I kept offering to redesign it, until eventually someone from the organization called my bluff and said, "Okay, you really want to do it? Then do it!"

As a student, this was how I secured one of my first major freelance assignments. Together with one of my best friends, Jort Nijhuis, we took on the challenge. One of the rules was that the promoters were not allowed to approach people on the purple walk paths around the booth. So, we made some design tweaks, such as reducing the visibility of the big screen from the outside, to encourage people to come inside and engage with our colleagues. It worked flawlessly, and our client was extremely pleased with the Final result. Every day, the booth was crowded with visitors from far and wide.

PIXAR Course: story telling

Raising awareness about the climate crisis can be a difficult topic for many people to talk about. However, I believe that we can all contribute in our own way. That's why I took a closer look at a company that I think is one of the best at conveying difficult messages in an enjoyable way: Pixar. Pixar creates films about complex subjects such as death, and still manages to tell a beautiful and touching story that resonates with everyone.

In 2022, I enrolled in a storytelling course at Pixar Xperiental, where I learned from Pixar and Disney artists. The course focused on storytelling, which was a significant challenge for me. Especially because I wanted to tackle a quite  a difficult subject: the meaning of life and the pursuit of happiness.

This is the first (and not final) version of the storytelling video:

Jim's Quest For Happiness
