modern playscape

Renzo Piano's vision for the terraced rooftop at the NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam was to create a true piazza, or city square.

I was part of the NorthernLight creative team, when we were tasked with developing a modern rooftop playscape that not only catered to children but also functioned as a city park for the neighborhood.

Our main objective was to highlight the potential of renewable energy sources.

Our design philosophy for this rooftop playscape was focused on creating a space that would encourage interaction, maximize space, and maintain a sense of harmony.

We intentionally avoided the use of excessive colors or visually themed elements, which can create a cluttered and overwhelming environment for children.

Instead, we created an open and inviting space that would allow children to use their imaginations and come up with their own games and activities, all while highlighting the potential of renewable energy sources in a interactive and engaging way.

design for creativity

Since its opening in 2016, the city park has remained highly popular among visitors of all ages, including locals from the surrounding neighborhood.

I am particularly fond of this project because the design aligns with my personal philosophy of prioritizing function over unnecessary aesthetics while still creating visually appealing and calming spaces.

Furthermore, I firmly believe that children should not be limited to structured toys or themed designs, as this could stifle their creativity. That's why I am proud of this project's design, which resembles a "zen-looking" playground that encourages children to think freely and express their creativity.

This project was completed during my employment at creative design agency NorthernLight.
